1) Choose complimentary colors

I know it may be hard to narrow down your color choices, however, choosing 2-3 colors for your session can really help with the aesthetic flow. The goal is always to create beautiful artwork to be featured in prints, wall art, or albums. Having complimentary and coordinating colors can help it all flow and look good being next to each other. Your photographer should also be able to take your suggestions and help create sets that compliant each other, such as the images above. Mint and Pink is a classic combination and I was able to incorporate both while providing variety and also an aesthetically pleasing flow for them to be featured together.

2) Consider your home decor and WARDROBe color preferences

Do you prefer to wear warm tones, cool tones, bold colors, or black? This can help your photographer narrow down what colors may look best. Family portraits are usually the ones hung in your open living space so having timeless and neutral colors that can grow with you and your living space is essential. Your aesthetic and color palette may change, but choosing colors that compliant your skin tone will really help the images pop. If you aren't sure, let you your photographer know and they should be happy to help you!

3) White is always a BEAUTIFUL and timeless option

If you can't quite decide, or want something that will be timeless and able to be featured no matter your home decor and style then white is always a safe and beautiful option. It can compliment any skin tone and really makes the focus your little one. With a variety of posing, props, and accessories you can still get incredible variety just using one color. White is always an understated and beautiful choice.

4) Do you like florals, patterns or solid color?

While colors are important, it's also important to let your photographer know if you prefer florals, patterns, or solid colors. Florals, and simple patterns can photograph beautifully and add a style and aesthetic to your photographs that you may not get with your portraits. Soft florals are especially popular for baby girls and can make some beautiful wall art to hang in the nursery.

5) Is there something that has special meaning to you?

Your newborn session is just as much a creative session as it is to create beautiful artwork. Did you have a themed baby shower? Maybe you grew up on a farm? This is your precious rainbow baby? Where you met your spouse has special meaning? This is your opportunity to let your photographer know. These images are your chance to capture those tiny precious moments that you can cherish for a lifetime.

6) Lastly, consider your nursery theme

If you have a themed nursery or color palette this can be a great place to start and important for your photographer to know. Since the images are likely to be featured in these spaces choosing colors or possibly having a custom themed setup can really make it that much more special. Imagine this image on a large canvas hanging in a Winnie the Pooh nursery!
